What was the Sacred Band of Thebes?

The Sacred Band of Thebes was a regiment of specially selected soldiers, consisting of 150 pairs of homosexual lovers. They were the SAS of the Theban army in the 4th century BC and arguably the greatest military unit in ancient Greece. This is evidenced by their critical role in the battle of Leuctra – one of the few defeats the legendary Spartans suffered on land.
